Decision making

There are a lot of decisions that need to made...
Me, Memo, Linnea and Talloz at some party a few months ago.
Stole from Linnea's blog!
Nothing that should be brought up here, but it's on my mind and I am trying to deal with it all.

This week started out slowly with talking to family back in Europe/Asia, and tanning (the two fun things).

Now I am soon off for my talk and then I am not sure. Maybe a movie or just hanging around the house.
There was talk about watching Sunes Jul, which was the Julkalender in Sweden in 1991.
A Julkalender is a 15 min show for kids every morning in December, as a countdown for Christmas. It brings back memories, especially that one!

Other than that, Daniel and I have created a playlist on youtube with christmas songs...Not too popular at the house but hey, we also need the christmas spirit right? And it's not like there's any snow that can help us along the way!

At some point tonight I should do my nails, but I've been saying that for a week, so we'll see how that goes.
Maybe I will stay up and watch the funny videos we found on Youtube instead... which reminds me, scroll down and watch "Bamse og Kylling"... it's hilarious!

An explanation!

After having spent an hour or so on youtube Daniel and I found this video, which explains why Danish people are the way they are!

A few question:

1. Are they drunk?
2. Are they high?
3. Maybe both?
4. Why are they molesting the grey/brown chicken?
5. Is it ok to fart in public in Denmark?
6. Does all Danish people make sex noises while skiing?
7. If so, why?
8. Why does Bamse (the bear) look like a cow?
9. When on the beach, is that a drunk pig in the background?
10. Why is Chicken getting drunk, then throwing food on himself? Is this common in Denmark?
11. What animal is the one with the trunk?

Watch it!
No one understands what the chicken and bear says, but that's not the important part!!!!!

Watch and enjoy!!!!

Time flies

when you have fun... right?

This weekend has passed pretty fast! Although, it's not over yet!
Today I went with Memo and his parents to Chapala to check out the new house they are buying there!
Really nice view, too bad it doesn't have a pool.
After the house shopping we went on to have lunch, seafood... my favourite as you might know.
Naaa, as you should know by now I do not eat seafood... for the simple reason that people have a tendency to pee when they are swimming, I do not care too much for pee, especially not in my food!!!

So, I ate the only non-seafood on the menu... not bad... a piece of meat!

Back in Gdl we went downtown to look for some design book, Memo is a designer and wanted a book explaining rendering with 3D Max... not a clue what it means!
Anywho, I found a book of Dostoevsky, my favourite author after Allende...
I think it might be this one, it was in Spanish so I am not sure.
Maybe I will go back tomorrow and buy it!

In the night we went to a birthday party and then home bound to watch a few episodes of Entourage.

Just got off skype with my Mamma and now it's time to sleep!!!

Have a great Sunday!

On it goes...

The friday started out great... as I wrote earlier I went up on the roof to try on my new bikini and to work a bit on my tan!

Coming back down I had a quick shower, then on to talk with my mom and then to Anna-Karin, Fredrik and Vincent!
It was really nice... afterwards Daniel and I went out for a romantic lunch... I call it romantic since he pays; my credit card broke... other than that there was no romance!
Going back I made a stop at the alcohol store, got two bottles of wine, Memo n I will go up on the roof to watch the sunset today! Always nice, some bottles of white wine (in the freezer now) and a nice view can never go wrong!

Right now I am just resting in my room, listening to music. Finally got to listening to all that music Mr. Jack gave me almost 2 years ago now... it's really good!!! Thank you Jack!

PUSS and enjoy the weekend!

Weekend time!

Friday, time for the weekend again!
My new bikini

I will start my weekend out by going up on the roof to tan for a bit, get some colour to my pale skin...
While up there I will fix that second pair of pants, drink cold coke, read Cosmo and try to relax.

Tonight I will be going out for a bit... maybe a restaurant and then there's a party at Keyvan's house.

Maybe I should wake Daniel up... I don't want to be alone on the roof!

Pantless

It's almost 2 a.m here, meaning almost 9 a.m in Sweden.
And what am I doing this beautiful Thursday night, except trying to kill that stupid-ass mosquito, fixing pants... I have two pair of jeans to fix (not mine) and a bunch of shows to watch!
Quite a night huh!?

Anywho, the shopping spree went good today!
A dress, a skirt, a bikini and a pair of tights were bought...
The dress is awesome, and was really cheap!
I bought the tights because I thought I needed some sweat pants, but what is better than sweat pants!?
Nothing, and tights is the closest thing to nothing!!!

After shopping I went to talk to a person, then spent some time at Memo's while he watched his dolphin team lose again - shocker!

Anywho, after that, home bound, showing off the new stuff I bought, then on to what I mentioned earlier - fixing pants!

1st pair done, 2nd one about to start with!

Shopping!

Linnea and I will go out and make Terranova unsafe!
Linnea saw a cardigan, last time we saw a cardigan it was at Palacio De Hierro, Donna Karen, Linnea came up with the lamest excuses (LIES) to buy it... let's see how it goes today!

Now we're watching some shows on The American Network... pretty bad/good... american shows quoi!

Enjoy the rest of your days!

Family time...

My Mom and Findus
I just spent the first half of my day on skype with my amazing family!

My dad and Bettina are currently in Sweden visiting my sister and her cute family... so we decided to have a skype talk, all together... Baby Vincent even joined!
It was nice, we talked about Christmas, and other things, it was nice.
After my dad n Bettina left to the hotel to unpack my sister called back and we talked for a bit more.

My Mom and Kahn
Apperantly Baby Vincent scared the shit out of everyone yesterday; he stopped breathing and became all lifeless... usch, he came back to his senses but I think everyone is a bit scared it will happen again!

After talking with Anna-Karin, Fredrik and Vincent I went on to talk with meine Mutter... it was nice, we spoke for almost an hour!
We looked at baby pictures and cats!!!
I miss them all a lot and can't wait to see them to be honest!!!

Puss to all of you!
Min Mamma!

The big question...

The question always asked when someone is leaving a country/city behind is; Are you happy about leaving?

The reason I think of this right now is because Linnea and Patrick are leaving in 2ish weeks and Memo today asked Linnea whether she's happy about it or not...
It's a tricky question.

On one hand it's always sad to leave whichever place one was living in, and all that it entails; people, habits, house, etc. But on the other hand it is always exciting seeing the people waiting for you at the new/old destination.
It's always better to arrive to a place without expectations; no expectations no disappointment.
Same goes for when you leave a place; no expectations about who you will keep in touch with or who will keep in touch with you.
I've learnt that the people you least expect to keep in touch often do, whereas the ones you expect to send msgs don't... without expectations there are no hard feelings!
Same goes with expectations about the place you will return to, things always change, people change... the best is to go without any thoughts about what will happened... maybe a bit boring or cold, but like that you don't get hurt.

Anywho, bed time for me... it's midnight meaning, time to turn the heater on and tuck myself to bed!

One month and 2 days...

That's all I have left here in Mexico, if I won't be going to Cancun, which still needs to be decided.

Me and Eduardo, the old flatmate!
There are many things I would want to do before leaving, like going back to the beach, see one of those pyramids, go to see some cute Mexican city and maybe even get my butt to Tlaquepaque (?)...

Today it's Tuesday, but a Monday, since it's the first "real day" of this week, feels weird... I always get confused when there are fewer "real days" in a week than 5... my brain is lost!

Daniel is off to watch Lucha Libre tonight, seems very aggressive... not my cup of tea!
I feel like going to the movies this week... does anyone have a movie to recommend; that isn't Harry Potter or an action movie!?

Now, finishing watching Gossip Girl, had been loading for 3h until Daniel and I noticed that Patrick was downloading things = internet completely stops working...
So we paused the downloads (SORRY)....

PUSS

Mexico City!

This past weekend was a "long weekend" here in Mexico, although don't ask me why!

Memo, Daniel and I decided to drive to Mexico City, a 5-7h drive (depending on traffic).
Considering that we're living that close to a 23 million people city, we felt there were no excuses to miss out on it.
It felt really nice to be back in a "big city", Guadalajara feels more like a town in some way, no real high buildings etc.
We stayed at Memo's friends Erika's house. A nice little place with cute stickers on the walls, we took the Metro and Metro Bus to go down town.
There we met Mr Chepo, a long lost friend from Jönköping, whom I haven't seen in about 2 years, we walked around, looked at buildings and churches, also ruins, shorts Mexicans and boats at a museum.
In order to continue to boat experience it was decided to go to some lake/river placed in the south of the city.
There were colourful boats and a lot of people.
It was cold, but Daniel and I decided to warm our self up Swedish style = Beer, whereas the Mexican opted for socks and leg warmers!
From there we went back into the city to a cute little bar, where the boys entertained themselves with the boxing game while Erika, Daniel and I talked, not too bad.

Yesterday, Sunday, we made it to Reforma 222 all on our own, without any local guide, there we met up with Eduardo, who used to live with Cassia and me back in old Suecia, it was really nice!
We all drove to some part of the city where we walked around, looked at houses, there were markets, a Guiness world record attempt and Mexican food.
We stayed there many hours, and then went to a mall, walked around for a bit, and from there "home" bound...

Today we went to the mall in Santa Fe, met up with Luis, another lost friend from Jönköping, and Eduardo.
We had lunch and then drove back to Guadalajara.

The weather was awesome. Perfect, not too warm day time, around 25-27, sunny, and chilly nights, just like here.

I have no complaints about the city what so ever!
Amazing!

So got back home an hour ago, after a 5h drive back here, with only 2 quick stops, and a million tolls...
Now it's time for desperate housewives and after that bed!

A bit evil..

But I have to gloat a bit in this... snow storm in Sweden!
In Guadalajara, there is no sign of snow, none at all... the sky was clear blue, as always, the temperature was a comfortable 25, going towards slightly chilly at night time.
This is awesome, I have to say that any homesickness I might have had magically disappeared straight away when I heard!
Awww, les amis, I feel bad for you... kinda wish you guys could be here, BUT, it's not possible, is it!
Ahhhh....

I am done with the gloating.
Now I am watching a show on SVT Play (a Swedish Channel) about spoiled little brats, never worked or done anything in their lives. Quite amusing, yet sad.
Anywho, tonight our plan to take down our landlord Karen will be made... hopefully we will not have to pay for the month December, plus we might get some money for the parking lot that belongs to the apartment that she is renting out for 800 pesos to strangers.

I will leave you with a picture I took on the roof a few days ago, just to show you the difference between sunny paradise and snowy hell!

Puss to you all!

Any other Day...

Another Tuesday, some more studying and trips to the supermarket!

I might be going to Mexico City this weekend. Monday is a national holiday, so Memo suggested we try to go... Patrick couldn't, and Daniel is thinking about it. I will, however, whether he tags along or not.

It will be fun. I am hoping Eduardo, Chepo, hopefully Edder, and whoever else resides in this huge city, will be around at that time!
Haven't seen them for such long time!

Also, we can't live this close to the worlds biggest city and not go check it out!

Oh well, but up til then "normal" life will continue.

Västerås, July 2010
Anywho, last night Patrick, Daniel and I sat up late watching the 1st season of "Cougar Town", it was a hit, the boys liked it.
Today I will try to show an episode or so to Memo.
I also made pizzas last night... very tasty I have to say; fresh mushrooms and serrano ham... mmmm!
Ended the evening with some extra butter popcorn!

Have a great night... Oh, and all you Swedes, enjoy the snow storm, haha!

Red

So last night after writing that post, I started feeling weird again.
Meaning that the immigration office visit had to be cancelled today. Too bad, Linnea got her visa though, congratulations to her!

I am stuck in bed, have been watching shows up til now, but will start to study as soon as I am done writing this.

The guys and I had been talking about going to Mexico City soon, we were thinking next weekend.
Now something came up and I might go already this one!
We will see...
I've learnt not to get my hopes up for certain things.

Anywho, I am still feeling a bit iffy... so I will write more tomorrow!

The Swan Lake

So the weekend is over, and it's back to reality!

The Swan Lake
It was calm this weekend; I nice birthday party on Friday, home bound already at midnight. A calm night out with the flat mates, Talloz and Memo yesterday, we went to downtown Zapopan, probably the worst service I've ever experienced, but it all comes down to the company you have no?!
Anywho, early morning today, followed by a nap, skype with Mom and a nice little walk... then movie afternoon and Desperate Housewives and Boardwalk Empire now.
This will be followed by The Swan Lake... love it!

Tomorrow; wake up call at 7 am to go to the immigration office for our visas, then I will have to study a lot.

Hope you all had a good weekend, enjoy your Monday

Weekend again

As you guys might have noticed, updates are rare during the weekend.
This is because I am trying to enjoy my time as much as possible, I only have a month-ish left.
By busy I do not mean partying my ass off, but trying to spend time with friends and seeing as much as possible.

I will be back on Sunday, maybe a quick entry tomorrow!

Friday!

Not bad! The week went fast; it consisted of studying, translation and tanning, not much more.
I went to the movies yesterday with Memo, we saw "The Town", not a bad movie!

I will do that same thing today; I am translating things, I will go tan on the roof, and afterwards, I will study for a bit, not bad!

I will write more later this afternoon, when all you Europeans are in bed!

Cultural Differences

Being an B.A major I've taken my fair share of classes where Mr. Hofstede is the main focus, at least for parts of the course.
One of the courses that have affected me the most is the "Cross Cultural Management" course I took at Bilkent, Turkey.
Not only did it teach me a lot about myself and my (non existent) culture, but it also made me more aware of, and sensitive to other cultures.

I grew up in Sweden with a Swedish mother and Finnish father. The Swedish and Finnish cultures are similar, yet a bit different. Our family was expanded when I was around 16 to include "the Panamanians".
At the age of 18 I moved to Paris, lived there for 4½ years, I then lived in London and after having been back in Sweden for 1½ I moved to Turkey, now I am in Mexico.
I've been exposed to many different cultures at a very intimate level.
I am used to dealing with them, and usually don't have a problem with adapting (at least momentarily) to other people.
I am a so called "Third Culture Kid", which you can read more about here: Click here

Here it's sometimes been difficult. So I decided to look into the cultural differences of my mix and the Mexican.

On Mr. Hofstede's website, he writes this about the Mexican culture:

"Mexico's highest Hofstede Dimension is Uncertainty Avoidance (UAI) (82), indicating the society’s low level of tolerance for uncertainty... As a result of this high Uncertainty Avoidance characteristic, the society does not readily accept change and is very risk adverse.

Mexico has a low Individualism (IDV) ranking (30).. This is manifest in a close long-term commitment to the member 'group', be that a family, extended family, or extended relationships. Loyalty in a collectivist culture is paramount, and over-rides most other societal rules and regulations. The society fosters strong relationships where everyone takes responsibility for fellow members of their group.

Mexico has the second highest Masculinity (MAS) ranking in Latin America (69). This indicates the country experiences a higher degree of gender differentiation of roles. The male dominates a significant portion of the society and power structure. This situation generates a female population that becomes more assertive and competitive, although not at the level of the male population.

Another Dimension in which Mexico ranks higher than other Latin neighbors is Power Distance (PDI) with a rank of 81, compared to an average of 70. This is indicative of a high level of inequality of power and wealth within the society."

If you did not have the patience to read all that, which I actually recommend you do, it says Mexicans do not like risks, that they are more group focused than individualists, they are macho and that there are big inequalities in relationships at work or in society.

Whereas in Sweden, PDI (the power distance) is ranked at 25, meaning that there are small inequalities in relationships at work (between a superior and his workers for example) or in society.
Sweden is an individualist country, scoring a 79, compared to Mexico's 30. We do not rely on or identify ourselves with the group we (supposedly) belong to, or our family to the same extent as Mexicans will.

As for the previous two, Sweden scores on the different end of the chart on Masculinity, with a score close to 0. Swede's are equal, it does not matter if you are a man or a woman, you count as much, your opinion counts as much as anyone else's. In Sweden men will rarely try to dominate, women are stronger willed than here.

Other than that, we're less scared of risks, according to Hofstede, we're more open to unstructured situations.

The difference between Sweden and Finland is that Finland scores higher on all of the dimensions, not too much but there's a difference, and the difference between Finland and France is that France scores higher on each dimension, coming closer and closer to Mexico. Panama on scores very similar to Mexico on all the dimensions.

That is was Mr. Hofstede found.

Now, what did we notice, in bullet points:

  • Honesty: Not important, as long as you keep your image up, it doesn't seem to matter. Lying is a part of creating who you would like to be, being who you really are is not if importance (not all of course).
  • Confrontation: Won't happen, it's even recommended not to, since it can create a weird atmosphere, or drama. Keep your mouth shut, smile and then talk behind the persons back.
  • Help: You help someone if you know it is beneficial for you in the end (of course this has exceptions, and depends on the situation!). Also, do not help someone if it will make them loose face!
  • Macho: Guy's decides and (think) they are always right. Girls are puppets that are to be looked at, and shouldn't be talking too much (except for small talk). A girl that acts like a guy (or in a European way) will be perceived as easy or crazy (experienced by both Linnea and I, it does not seem to matter that we have bf's). You should also always respect the guy, although, be careful, this does not mean you get respect in return!
  • Being discrete: It is very important not to stand out from the group you want to be a part of. One should pretend to be something one is not if necessary!
  • Staring: Not an issue for the Mexicans. They don't seem to understand that it can be perceived as rude to stare at a person.
Conclusion: Mexico is a big High School, or Middle school even, because in High School me and my friends had grown enough as persons to know that honesty is key, confrontation is necessary to maintain a healthy relationship, men are always wrong, being part of a group is good; if you fit in without pretending to be something you are not, and most importantly... my mother always told me: It's (ugly)bad to stare.

Have a great night over in Europe, here I am sure I will wake up soon!

A quarter of a century

As I said, yesterday was Talloz birthday, today was Armando's.

Me, Armando and Talloz a few months ago
Armando turned 25... although at some point he said 22.
There was a "small" get together at his casa tonight. Some people were drunk, others drunker.
Memo and I just went for a few hours to say happy birthday at 12 and socialize a bit.

Now it's time to watch Modern Family and enjoy my popcorn "extra mantequilla" (extra butter)... yay!

Other than that today has been pretty event less, I helped out with some translation again, had an hour of spanish class with Senora Allende and went for a burger.

Tomorrow is a new day of studying, tranlsation, tanning and at night I might go to the movies, we're watching "The Town", not my choice, but what don't you do to please people!? (0;

One last thing...

Considering you were 121 people so far today to read the blog, I am quite surprised no one has anything to say about what I write, or what you want me to write about.

I know some of you can't leave comments, but I added the boxes in the bottom many months ago, so that you at least could let me know if what I write is interesting.

Anywho, I added another little thingie today. You can see it in the end of every post. Click it if you liked what I wrote...

A plus...

Lord,

Yes, I am up... It feels like I just went to bed. And I almost literary did, 4h ago.
I feel fresh like a flower! haha

But now it's a new day.

I need to study!

Everyone's more or less off today, so that's nice.
When I went to get the coke I noticed that Daniel seems to have missed his rehab this morning, shocker!

Linnea is up on the roof tanning, I will stay in bed though, with the excuse that 2 days in a row on the roof is too much! I will go again tomorrow.

Kisses to you!

Home...

Patrick n Talloz
So the surprise earlier was a cheesecake, maybe not too exciting, but I didn't want to give away the surprise!
We made Talloz a cheesecake because according to Linnea he likes them!
We also gave him a HUGE bottle of Baccardi, because he likes that too, that's actually the only thing I've seen him drink!

Anywho, Daniel is back!
He was missed... we had a nice long talk, listening to music!

Now I am off to bed!

Hihi...

Follow my blog with bloglovin

I am the worst person when it comes to surprises, I either tell the person what they will get,
Helena's Birthday party
Helena to the left, me in front
- Anecdote: Helena's (maybe) 5th birthday, I have bought her a necklace. Helena and I are best friends, so we played everyday almost. At one of these play dates I decided to tell her that my gift was a necklace.
Meine Mutter was not so happy. As you can tell, it started early.

Or, I can't keep a straight face, and the person realizes that something is going on.
- Anecdote: Today when I stole Memo's car keys, he just had to ask once where they were, immediately realizing I had them (my huge grin might have given me away, but only maybe).

Oh well... Today I've kept busy. After waking up, I studied for a few hours, then went up to the roof to multitask for a bit; Spanish class + Tanning.
Maybe not as easy as it sound.
Anywho, one of my favourite authors is Isabel Allende. I think I've read most of her books. So the other day I borrowed "Mi Pais Inventado" and decided that today was the day to start reading it.
It was nice up there, some wind and a clear blue sky. I didn't even melt away as usually is the case.

Anywho, when I came down I had to go to the store to buy some supplies for what was coming next.
Starting to make (you will know later on what it was) ** I realized more supplies were needed, so second journey to Soriana, I tried to chose a different cashier this time, I don't want them to think I am crazy for coming twice in half an hour.

The making of *** went fine.
When done, Memo came over. I had to help out with some translation.
First time in my life I translated from Spanish to English. The work might need to be checked, haha!
Anywho...

Tonight will be good, Talloz birthday...

Amazing!

I slept the whole night.
Probably around 11h! Amazing!
Fell asleep around midnight, 1 am! That my friends is amazing! Really amazing!
Talloz and me at Tec
I took 3 pills thou, which knocked me out, until now, noon!
Oh well, am writing this post, and then I will start studying!

Tonight we have a birthday party to attend. Talloz turns old, hahaha! He's turning 26!
For 26 days he will be a lot closer to 30 than I am!

Oh, for those who wondered. I said, maybe a month and a half ago, that I would quite smoking again.
I have cut down a lot on smoking, but I have to be honest, I haven't quite completely!
I really hope I will be able to before I leave Mexico. It's so much more expensive over there!

I wish I had a printer that worked right now, the one we have stopped working, so that I could print the articles I need to read, and go up on the roof and get it done!
Oh well, I will read a bit, then grab the book memo lent me and head up there.

Mind

I have had a bit of a "svacka", translation "dip" according to www.tyda.se, which is the website I use the most for translation English to Swedish.
Anywho, and many other people have had the same problem.
All of us for different reasons, but in the end there's only one solution.
Pretend to smile
Since none of us can change what is making us feel this way, we just have to try to fool our minds into believing that we are happy, content with our situation.

The power of the mind is stronger than you think!

So, to sum up, my solution to the problem is to try to tell myself that I am in fact happy, that I don't have any problems and that everything will work out. Because, if there's something I've learnt, it always works out in the end. It might not be exactly what we thought we wanted or thought would happened, but that doesn't mean it wont be nice.

Tomorrow, or today for you in Europe, I will be studying, preparing a surprise for a birthday boy and maybe even have time to go tan (impossible today because it was too hot).

Also, if anyone wants to know something about Mexico, or any other country I've lived in, just let me know. Either through facebook or via email (scroll down, to the bottom, just above the ads) (since I've noticed a lot of you can't leave comments).
